Before I share my highlight, I have to say it’s kind of nuts how mature our characters are given their age. All of them are in their younger twenties and yet…
- Yu-rim knew what it was like to sacrifice for family
- Nee-Do knew how to handle the evil side of the press
- Moon Ji-ung knew how to immediately get over his fear of driving and race to the airport for his love
- Seung-wan could patiently deal with her own situation about getting into college.
- Baek Yi Jin could handle backstabbing a life long friend because it was part of his job
When I was in my younger 20’s, all I thought about were paychecks and when to go rock climbing or play volleyball. Now I say this with the understanding that the show is completely fictional but damn…I guess these details show how well thought out the writing and character development is for each character. Now onto my highlight!
My highlight!
My highlight for this episode is Nee-Do and Yu-rim’s friendship. It’s definitely one of the main relationship focuses of this korean drama. While you see their friendship evolve from one of enemies to friends, we get to witness how strong their friendship is in this episode because it’s tested under extreme conditions from Yu-rim’s family struggles and fencing reputation.
When Yu-rim witnessed her parents fight and realized how much worse her family’s financial situation was, she went to Nee-Do first instead of Yi Jin or Moon Ji-ung (her boyfriend). In the beginning of the korean drama, she had nobody to go to and she took her feelings out by trying to almost kill herself high diving. When she arrives in front of Nee-Do’s house, she first tells Nee-Do that she didn’t high dive. Nee-Do immediately hugs her and recognizes that she’s in pain. They eventually talk it out and instead of arguing with her about her decision to leave, Nee-Do tries to empathize with her. Now that’s a great quality to have in a friend because it’s trusting that your friend isn’t going to judge you for your choices.
When Yu-rim gets trapped by the reporters at the gym, she calls Nee-Do for help. We see Nee-Do come up in a cab in the next scene (pretty fast IMO). She forces her way through the crowd of reporters, pounds the gym door to let Yu-rim know its her, and hugs her once she gets in (no words…just a hug). Those types of gestures really show how far and deep the trust Nee-Do and Yu-rim have for each other. It goes on even further when Nee-Do help plans an escape route and even talks back to a restaurant owner to get Yu-rim food. I would like to think that this type of friendship exists, but I have yet to see one IRL.
To be quite frank, I wish I had a friend like Nee-Do right now. I sort of did in high school and college. It’s definitely harder to make that type of friend when you’re a young working professional. Unlike high school or college, you aren’t seeing the same people in the same classroom on a set schedule everyday. I’m facing a lot of hardships and trials that I wish I could share with somebody like Nee-Do. Having somebody that can understand or at least listen really makes the pain or struggle more tolerable. My hope is that you as a reader has a certain somebody you can go to when you are facing some real tough stuff.
Considering the majority of the episode was focused on Yu-rim, my feeling is that the last 2 episodes will focus on how the rest of the characters will split and forge their own future (1 for Moon Ji-ung & Seung-wan and the other for Yi-Jin & Nee-Do). The next episodes are definitely going to involve a lot of heartbreak. A part of me doesn’t want to watch the rest of the korean drama, but it’s a mission I must finish. Here we goooooooooooooo
