Black Crown Coffee is the only two floor coffee shop I’ve been to in Tucson, and I believe it’s the only multi-floor coffee shop in Tucson. It’s also the only coffee shop I’ve been to that opens until 12AM, which is so cool. Late night studying anybody?
Brief Background
Black Crown coffee is located on east side of Tucson:
It’s the highest rated Tucson coffee shop on Google, with 1200+ reviews and a 4.7/5 rating.
On Yelp, it has 200+ reviews with a 4.3/5 rating.
The owner used to go to the coffee shop when it was known as Safehouse. He purchased the coffee shop in order to carry on the legacy and comfort Safehouse had brought. Super awesome!
Decor: 6/10
The interior feels a bit old, but it complements the chill atmosphere that the shop aims to bring. Even the owner mentioned that the shop has a dive bar theme, so don’t expect a modern, sleek, or minimalist design coffee shop.
It does feel a little cramped inside, but that didn’t bother me at all. A lot of people are here studying or hanging out, so maximizing the amount of space felt appropriate.
Almost all wood furniture for the seating area. Some of the wood seating looks pretty dated with scratch marks and knicks.
There’s a staircase that leads up to the second floor. Second floor has couches and tables. I do like how there’s a big wall of windows that extends up to the second floor. It gives a good view of the outside and lets in a lot of light!
Coffee: 7/10
They have a lot of drinks!
I got the flavored latte with reduced sugar free vanilla with oatmilk. I’ve slowly been drinking more unflavored coffee so I asked for less syrup. The coffee cost roughly $7.00.
They use a Uganda medium to dark roast blend. The coffee is pretty smooth and didn’t have a bitter aftertaste. The coffee body was light.
For the price and taste, I thought the coffee was alright.
They have a ton of unique drinks and flavored syrups. So if you like sweeter coffee, this is definitely a coffee shop to check out 🙂
Pastries: N/A
They also serve pastries here but I wasn’t hungry enough to get one. They did look good though.
Productivity: 9/10
There’s a good amount of space for how small the coffee shop is. There’s 4 big booths on the first floor and additional tables on both floors.
The productivity vibe is strong, with many people studying and working. Almost every table has a nearby socket, which is a huge plus!
The Wi-Fi is also pretty fast!
If you’re a bit weird like me and like working or studying late at night, this place stays open until 12AM! I studied at this coffee shop from 3PM to 6PM. There were people consistently trickling in to study even around 6PM.
Parking: 7/10
There’s a parking lot, but it’s pretty small. If the coffee shop gets packed, finding parking can be pretty tough.
Black Crown coffee is a great little Tucson coffee shop. It’s got a very relaxing atmosphere. I’d definitely recommend it for those who want a chill space with a wide variety of coffee drinks.
Even though it’s a bit far from where I live, I plan to come here more often!
